Fatty acids that are essential to the body fall into two broad types, that is, docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid. Another less significant type of omega-3 is the alpha-linoleic acid (ALA). This one is derived from plant tissues. Major sources are hemp, chia, and flaxseed.

ALA can be converted into DHA and EPA by the body. However, the process takes a long time and only occurs to a very low ratio regardless of the amount consumed. Most health benefits associated with omega-3s are as a result of animals-based DHA and EPA and not plant-based ALA. That makes it important to consume more animal-based omega-3s.

Having these fats in low concentrations in the body increases chances of dying from any kind health problem. Consuming the fats in huge amounts is linked to many health benefits that short-term supplements cannot give.

It has been determined that omega-3s are good at fighting anxiety and depression. These mental disorders affect people globally and they can cause severe physical and emotional effects in people if not treated. People who eat omega-3s are less likely to suffer from these disorders. People also exhibit improvement in symptoms after consuming the fats. For people with depression, EPA is the recommended kind of omega-3.

Brains and retinas are made of several components, and omega-3 are among these components. Eye problems develop in people who consume these fats in small quantities. Macular degeneration is more likely to occur in people who do not consume DHA fatty acids. Permanent damage to the eyes and blindness are in large part caused by macular degeneration.

Deaths caused by stroke and heart attacks are lower in communities that eat fish a lot because fish contains substantial amounts of omeg-3. Benefits for heart health are linked to omega-3 fatty acids. These benefits include reduction in blood pressure, triglycerides, blood clots, inflammation, and plague. These fats prevent clumping together of blood platelets and raise the levels of HDL-cholesterol in the body.

According to studies, omega-3s also help to improve symptoms of ADHD in kids. ADHD tends to be more common in kids whose omega-3 blood level is lower. Symptoms such as aggression, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity can be reduced by taking these fats. Other problems that these fats can help with are autoimmune disease, asthma, skin health, menstrual pain, and bone and joint health.
